The Thin Line Between Solitude and Isolation

Stepping Away from the Rat Race
4 March 2024“2024 gives us an extra day, so why not make it extra special by taking a leap of faith?”, I asked myself before closing my eyes and hitting send. I actually had a stomach bug the entire next day, but that’s not why we’re here LOL!
Ever had a moment in your life where you decide to hit the reset button, step out of your comfort zone, and make a crazy but important decision for your well-being’s sake? This is exactly where I currently find myself. Instead of life throwing me curveballs, I decided to throw them at life instead! I swear most times I am 100% sure that I made the best decision and I can’t wait to get to the other side, yet, at other times it feels as though I am standing at the crossroads of uncertainty. In fact, I have never heard so many voices speaking over each other in my head before, it feels like I am in a constant war between faith, reassurance, confidence, doubt and uncertainty.
Think of doubts as the clouds that occasionally cover the sun. Confidence is the ability to believe in the warmth behind the clouds even when they seem overwhelming. When you choose confidence you recognise that uncertainties may linger, but you have the strength to move forward regardless. Therefore choosing yourself is a powerful affirmation that screams louder than any voices that may be chattering in your head. In my case I was saying, “I matter, I believe in my ability to shape my own journey the way I want to and I am worthy of my own attention and care.” Your faith, together with the confidence and belief that everything will work out for your good, will always protect you from the doubts that try to confuse and discourage you.
Life is full of countless transitions, from starting a new job to moving to a different city, starting or even ending a relationship. While change is inevitable, how we navigate these transitions can greatly impact our well-being and sense of fulfillment. This is where the practice of mindfulness comes in.
Practicing mindfulness, by paying attention to the present moment with openness, curiosity, and acceptance, allows us to go through life’s changes with resilience, clarity, and peace of mind. During times of change, it’s easy to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets about the past. Mindfulness encourages us to focus our awareness in the here and now, allowing us to approach transitions with a sense of calm and composure. It also helps us stay true to ourselves in life’s changes by tuning into our thoughts, feelings, and sensations, guiding us with clarity.
As I navigate the emotions and thoughts that come and go, I challenge you to join me as I practice some mindfulness techniques which I know we’ll enjoy:
- Mindful journaling involves bringing your full attention to the present moment as you write, allowing you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment. By approaching journaling with mindfulness and intention, you can deepen your self-awareness, reduce stress, and gain valuable insights into your thoughts and emotions.
- Visualization is a powerful technique to achieve goals. Follow these steps: Set clear, SMART goals. Find a quiet space. Relax your mind with deep breathing. Visualize achieving your goals vividly, engaging all senses. Focus on positive emotions. Be specific and detailed in your visualization. Make it a daily habit. Stay positive and redirect doubts. Combine visualization with real-world actions for effective results.
- Taking a short walk outdoors and focusing your attention on the sensations of walking—the feeling of your feet touching the ground, the movement of your muscles, and the rhythm of your breath. I have been doing this already but would love to get more intentional!
- Gratitude Practice: I am moving my gratitude jar to my kitchen counter and every morning before I make tea, coffee or food, I will take a few moments to reflect on things I am grateful for.
Mindfulness is like a steady guide that helps us gracefully handle life’s challenges. Choosing ourselves and embracing change can stir up doubts, but mindfulness is like a secret superpower that keeps us strong. It’s all about being aware of the present moment and finding clarity when things get uncertain. So, as you face ups and downs, remember that mindfulness is your friend, and will help you navigate all this with grace until you find calm in doubt’s chaos.
I can’t wait to share more of my journey with you, especially the real juicy parts about what exactly happened (the tummy ache eventually stopped and my appetite returned). I look forward to celebrating my small and big wins as I continue to challenge myself and my faith. If you are also going through some life changes, know that you’re not alone, we’re all in this together as we race to the other side.
