The Beautiful Chaos of Motherhood, Guilt, and Accountability

The Thin Line Between Solitude and Isolation
22 February 2024Love, often described as the greatest gift, holds a central place in the teachings of the Bible. However, in a world increasingly influenced by the self-love movement, it’s important that we revisit the biblical perspective on love. Contrary to the modern emphasis on self-love, the Bible instructs us to prioritize love for God and others. I’ve been turning this thought over in my mind for a while now, and I know it might seem a bit unexpected coming from me – as someone who has been an activist and advocate of the self-love movement.
Does championing self-love align with the wisdom found in the Word?
The Bible highlights love as one of its core commandments, urging believers to follow the example set by Christ in Philippians 2:3-4 and Matthew 6:33—putting God’s kingdom and others’ interests first. Now, the self-love movement promotes the idea of unapologetically prioritizing oneself. It makes sense to a certain extent; after all, taking care of yourself isn’t a bad notion. However, this focus on self might divert our attention from the Bible’s emphasis on humility and giving glory to God.
2 Timothy 3:1-5 issues a warning against the self-love trend that has infiltrated contemporary culture. It prompts us to consider if our self-love stance aligns with the biblical principle of prioritizing God and others. It’s a delicate balancing act, navigating the contrasting ideas, and it adds an intriguing layer to understanding the self-love landscape in light of biblical teachings.
While the self-love movement champions acceptance, it might unintentionally impede personal growth and transformation. Embracing our identity as God’s children requires a constant pursuit of positive change and improvement. Romans 12:2 emphasizes the transformative power of renewing our minds, reinforcing the idea that constant alignment with God’s will brings about a continuous process of spiritual renewal in our lives. Rather than accepting stagnation, this journey encourages an ever-evolving journey toward growth and renewal.
Shifting our focus from the encouragement of self-love, let’s recognize the importance of making time for self-care. Instead of being caught up in the extremes of self-glorification or self-loathing, let’s rather focus on embracing of self-compassion, and patience, fostering the replenishment of our bodies.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 emphasizes the importance of caring for our bodies as they are recognized as temples of the Holy Spirit. This involves saying no to things we’re uncomfortable with or shouldn’t be doing, exercising, nourishing our bodies with healthy food, and acknowledging the need to take a break, even if it might seem momentarily selfish. Acknowledging the importance of doing this, we realize that these acts of self-care go beyond personal satisfaction, but are a vital foundation for extending the same grace to those around us. Proverbs 3:3-4 guides us to bind kindness and truth around our necks, and Ephesians 4:2 calls us to bear with one another in patience and humility. By spending quality time with God, studying His word, and meditating on it, we find the strength to fulfill our responsibilities with a heart overflowing with love.
As we explore love, moving from thinking about ourselves to what the Word says, remember that taking time to nourish our minds, bodies, and spirits isn’t just a personal indulgence; it’s a fundamental step towards a life enriched with love.
As we step out each morning, may our hearts be filled with the overflow of compassion, kindness, and patience. May our self-care journeys become not just personal endeavors but radiant forces that shape how we show up in the world, allowing us to emanate love from the very core of our being.
